Alternate title: Japan Week 2015

It's been an atrociously long time since I've updated this blog. It still has that dopey (but awesome) header that Gary made ages ago. It needs to be updated again, because Cora is so much bigger now! But babies tend to do that don't they?

So this week (April 18-26) is Japan Week in Spokane. Thus far it has been oooookay. It started off at the Northeast Museum of Art and Culture this year, as opposed to Riverpark Square Mall. So that was neat. It's only been a thing for a couple years, and apparently this year they had a lot more people show up than in previous years. As someone who has more than a passing interest in Japanese culture, it makes me very happy! Someday I might find some friends who have the same kind of interest as me. Gary wore his yukata that I made for him, though we need some practice getting it to stay straight while he wears it. I didn't get a picture of him. Darn.

Actually, we did run into the one other (non-japanese) person who was wearing kimono. We chatted with him for a bit. His name was Thor. He had a cool accent; his family is from Germany. He even made himself a bento for the occasion, which made me happy. Now I wish I had taken a picture of his bento box, because it was gorgeous and had a lid like I've never seen before.

It was tiny, maybe only 4 inches, and square with 3 tiers; like this (only with a phoenix motif, which apparently is also rare, because I can't find a picture of one):

But with a lid that looked like this:

Seriously the coolest thing I've ever seen. I've never been able to gush over a bento box with someone before, so it was a good day.

We got to see taiko drumming for the first time. Taiko is very loud but has a great beat, and unlike watching the drums in say, a marching band, it is very entertaining to watch.

This is Peri cheating at yo-yo fishing. You are supposed to catch your yo-yos with a hook attached to a bit of paper. You can see the little girl in the pink using one if you squint. If you can hook it before your paper breaks, you get to keep it. It's hard, so they let all the little kids who try keep one. There was also a goldfish catching pond, where you try to catch a goldfish with a paper paddle before the paddle breaks. We did not visit it, because we were not going to take a goldfish home. Maybe next year.

I just want to say that MS Paint is a powerful tool and a no-frills way of making little things like this. Anyways, we'll be taking new pictures of our family here soon, and Naomi with all of her art, digital art, design, and layout experience can make a new and better header. I like to write, and use power tools.

Cora is ten-days old today, and back past her birth weight. We had to jump straight to size 1 diapers for her, and her newborn clothes are already a little iffy. I absolutely adore her, and Peri wants to hold her all the time. Both Naomi and Peri are thoroughly worn out for their efforts, seen here:

We've been very blessed to have Naomi's mom come and stay with us for a few weeks. Peri has enjoyed doing crafts and going to the pool with Oma.

Anyways, this is just to introduce my dumb little header. We're all doing fine.

after a whole lot of work (99.999% of it on Naomi's part) we welcome baby Cora McCulloch Jackson to our little family. Cora came three days after her due date and weighed in well over a pound heavier than Peri did nearly three years ago. At 9 pounds, 9 ounces, and 20.5 inches, she's fairly massive. And she's strong. We arm wrestled a few times yesterday and she beat me half the time. She passed all of her tests and came home just over 24 hours after birth. Peri loves her to pieces already and is working very hard to throw her a birthday party (Peri LOVES birthdays).

Now we've got to get the picture albums out and compare her to pictures of Peri to find out "who she looks like." I think she looks like a Cora.

Hey! I build lots of useful things. Like this bunk bed.

We've been talking for a while on how the arrangements are going to be when baby Cora comes. We also would like the idea of having the option of having sleepovers in Peri's room. The answer was a bunk bed. A bunk bed we could make ourselves.

I've been following a woodworker named Matthias Wandel for about a year now, and among his more interesting projects, he has published plans for more practical works. We found his bunk bed plans and ran with them. Naomi did all of the material calculations, layout, and markup while I did all the cutting, drilling, and assembly. This worked out to three weekend trips to Grandma's, which Peri didn't mind at all.

My mom wasn't too sure about the whole operation until she saw it dry-fitted in the basement before we took it home. I think she liked it, and I sure do like it. We still have a long way to go with it, like sanding, sanding, rounding over the hard edges, filling some gaps, sanding, and painting, but it's a great addition to our home. And really, the only one who needs to like it really, really likes it. Behold:
In all fairness, he builds lots of useful things.

Sooooooo, it's been a while since we posted anything. We've been busy doing a bunch of things, but I've not had the motivation for doing a blog post in a while. Oh well, life and all that.

But! We're having some family over for a week-long visit in just 6 days, and we're really excited to get our apartment in some semblance of order so it won't be completely trashed when our relatives leave. Not that they are the type to trash things, it just happens when you have a lot of people in a small, small space. We've been wanting to organize stuff for a while, but this visit has been the major push to purge a bunch of crap that's been lying around and also find systems that will be easy to maintain while they are here and after they leave. We've already done a little in the living room and it has been a LIFESAVER. It is so much easier to clean up and it takes way more time for things to get really dirty, so for someone who is a lazy cleaner like me, it has been awesome!

We are really really excited about the thing Gary made today though! We don't have a lot of seating just now, especially in the kitchen. We are going to have 9 people in our house for a week, so we need more seats for everyone to sit at the kitchen table.

Gary was over at his mum's house doing some basement work for her, and he decided to make a bench out of some "reclaimed" wood from her basement stairway to ease some of our seating woes. He just put in new stair runners, so he had all these 2x10 boards lying about just waiting to be put together into something new.

Funny thing is, when he brought it home, as excited as we were to have a bench for peeps to sit on, we won't be using it for seating forever, so I had the idea that when we were done with it, we could use it as shoe storage in our entry.

We had shoe storage already, but it looked like this:

It was just a stopgap to give us a definitive place to put shoes, not really a method that we thought was going to work. It is what it is, and what it is, is a box turned on it's end with some shoes stuck haphazardly in to it. It's rather underwhelming.

But now we have this!

We have a shoe bench! Peri insists that her shoes go on top. It has plenty of room for our shoes on the bottom shelves (or shelf and floor I guess), and then guests can put their shoes on top. Gary's bike is actually mounted to the wall right above this, so it's not really a place where we can sit and put our shoes on.

I don't really like the bike there, but there is literally no other place where it could possibly go, so I live with it. It's saving us money for Gary to go to work on bike instead of by train, and he's really, really jazzed to be getting 16 miles of exercise every day, so I deal with it.

So now we still don't have seating in our kitchen, but Gary plans to make another bench just like this one to go in our kitchen, and we'll never be lacking kitchen seating or shoe storage again.

The End.

A lot of times it's just Peri getting out the Elmer's glue and going to town making "glue art." I don't know why, but she really enjoys putting beads of glue on paper. She gets really focused and makes puddles and lines and is very precise in where she puts things. Just recently she started getting into the crafty bag and pulling out pom poms to stick to her glue art after she makes it. It's really cool for Gary and I to watch her be independently creative.

It's been a while since we've done a blog post, so I'll just go through some of the crafts we've made, even though a few of them are from earlier than Thanksgiving. Oh well.

Just after we moved into our apartment, Peri saw some cool My Little Pony fleece at JoAnn's and wouldn't leave the store without it. We got enough for her to make a pillowcase, and she adores it. She helped me make it by sitting on my lap and taking out the pins while I sewed. She just loves to watch the sewing machine go, and I'm looking forward to the time when I can teach her to do some actual sewing on the machine!
A bit more recently, Peri begged me for a craft to do (as she often does), and I went to the Pinterest board for ideas. Peri was quite taken with this one and since I had a bunch of buttons in Peri's favorite colors lying around, I said why not? I only have the one crappy phone picture of it to post, so just know that it is shinier and way more awesome in real life. We put it in a frame and will hang it somewhere someday. That's how much I like it. I drew the tree, Peri got to decide where to put the buttons, and I applied the hot glue for her. She's got a good sense of aesthetics I think. She even put some buttons on top of other buttons for that 3D effect! Awesome!
Peri has a whole wall full of crafts and pictures she's made, and we keep adding to it weekly. I have no doubt she'll have her whole room plastered with her artwork in no time. Her favorite thing is adding a new piece to her gallery. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I started making ultrasound frames after I gave one as a gift to a friend of mine for her baby shower. A lot of people liked it and it was great fun to make, so I just thought, why not more? So I opened an Etsy shop and started putting things there. I even sold a few!

Then life got in the way and I had to stop and close my shop for a while. It was a real bummer.

But as I said, now that we're settled I can make more! And the icing on the cake is that my husband bought me a Silhouette Cameo and I can cut them out on that and they turn out really crisp and pretty! They make me really happy! I still draw them freehand, but cutting them out is much easier, and I can make multiples of the same one much easier than I used to be able to.

These are the ones I've got done so far:

They are all really simple and similar to one another, but I have plans to make some that are more complicated later on.

Something I think is really cool about them though, is since I draw them myself, they can be endlessly customized. I can make them look like someone, or change the colors, the size, the layout, the caption... you name it!

One thing I didn't count on though... even with the cutting machine, they are a lot of work to make! Drawing simple ones like these are no problem, but I have to trace them into a cutting file afterward, and that takes quite a bit of time. Then I have to find fonts that fit in the caption bubbles that will cut easily on the Cameo... It's been a bit of a process trying to figure it all out. I will figure it all out though, and then I'll have lots of fabulous frames! And even if I don't end up selling them, they make great gifts, so I'll never lack for presents for my pregnant friends!

Aaaaaand if anyone is interested, you can see them at my Etsy store! I know I've been pushing this a lot lately, but here's one more plug for Desert Bus for Hope.

It's for a cause I really stand behind, and it's a lot of fun.

Naomi was at a Relief Society activity, so Peri and I made the best of it by making a fort. It was a pretty good one, too, as part of it spilled over under a table. I don't even remember taking this video, but I think it shows how good Peri is at cinema- and photography. Really artsy.

I also want to take a minute and plug the Child's Play charity. It's a great opportunity to help children. I just read today that scope of the charity will be expanded to include domestic violence shelters. In conjunction with this, I also want to plug Desert Bus for Hope 7. Let's see how much good we can do.Gary "Race" Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10723968568528166236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030707898884680375.post-8574722331713250812013-11-08T21:29:00.000-08:002013-11-08T21:29:54.250-08:00Presenting: The Trifecta of Peri Likes, Fall 2013Below is a video featuring three things Peri absolutely adores: Her yukata, her bike, and her wellies.

She got her bike clear back on her birthday, and it took a couple months
to grow into it. Now that she's big enough, Peri is out riding about
twice a week. What's really cool, and this is something that I'm proud of, is that Peri refuses to ride her bike without her helmet. She'll just sit in the saddle and not roll an inch until we get her helmet on her.

Six years ago, Naomi started a sort-of kimono for her then two-year-old niece. Needless to say, it finally got finished last week for our two-year-old. Peri absolutely loves her purple dress, and insisted on wearing no less than twice in the first week.

And finally, we have her wellies. Peri is a big fan of splashing in puddles, so it suddenly became very smart to have the appropriate footwear upon moving to the puddly side of the state. It turns out that Fred Meyer has a wellie section completely separate from regular shoes.

Just a quick update for all of you who can't get enough of our little Peri.

Naomi Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17892943511685591894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030707898884680375.post-22831158436165178242013-09-29T20:39:00.000-07:002013-09-29T20:39:19.833-07:00Peri Likes: Summer 2013 EditionPeri has found a lot of new things she likes. She likes hiking, with and without her backpack. In the last few times we've gone out, she's ended up walking a half mile on her own. She also loves her new bike, and has her own little toolbox for her wrenches to work on it after every ride. Furthermore, she's warmed up to her trailer and her ladybug bike helmet.

She likes taking pictures. Every time we get the camera to take pictures, Peri begs and pleads for a chance to have a turn with the camera. You wouldn't know it, because I am really bad at taking pictures, but for a two-year-old, she's an amazing photographer.

Peri is really into asking politely for things now. We're hoping to cultivate that. She likes to ask, "can we go outside?" and "can we get some ice cream? Pleeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzee?"

She likes her little pool, and is stoked every time I blow it up and fill it.

More than anything, Peri likes singing. As I write this, she's underfoot singing "The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock." She's got a catalog of about twelve songs she'll go through in a day, and at bedtime, we let her choose what she wants to hear and sing. Her doctor was really impressed when we told her and we were very happy when Peri decided to overcome her shyness around others and sang the alphabet song.

Peri loves Nursery at church. She gets excited and talks it up all week. She even does our "dun dun dun, Superman" song, replacing Superman with SuperNursery! She loves learning the songs and playing. She doesn't interact much with the other kids, but that's because she's observing and learning, absorbing as much information as she can process. This is really cool for Naomi and me, because when we taught Nursery in Pullman, we always felt like we weren't making a difference and the kids weren't learning anything.Gary "Race" Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10723968568528166236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030707898884680375.post-19862280446832873562013-09-29T20:38:00.002-07:002013-09-29T20:38:39.474-07:00We've Moved! We've moved to Auburn! The fourteenth largest city in Washington is our new home, and it's great. We found a great little apartment close to downtown, the train station, and everything we could possibly want. The train station is a nice one for me, as it facilitates an easy commute to Kent, where I got a new job. I now work for Out of the Box Manufacturing. It's a cool little company that is on the grow (so much that we're moving to a new location next month and tripling our floor plan in the process), and I think I will be happy there for a very long time. I've been able to really dive in and do what I know how to do, and learn some new things, too.

Naomi is happily working on getting us unpacked and the apartment in some kind of order, and Peri is absolutely thrilled to have her own room and a giant space for playing.

We want to give a big thanks to Naomi's brother, Ben, who came over with us and helped carry everything we own into a courtyard and up a flight of stairs. This is the third or fourth move he's helped us with now and by far the most... grueling, and we owe him something nice for his efforts.

Not only is train commuting a possibility in our current location, but we're also situated next to the Interurban Trail, a bike trail for the cool guys who can ride their bikes ten miles like it's not a big deal. The sudden snap of rain and cold has put me off a little bit, but I can see myself enjoying the summer months so much more. I've also figured I can ride the distance almost as fast as I could drive.

Peri got a little art easel for Christmas last year which has been sitting in storage, and now it's her favorite thing. I get a lot of requests to draw cats and dogs and mommy monsters. Also, potty training is under way with fairly reasonable results. She's got a whole repertoire of songs she likes to sing, and she can memorize a new song after hearing it once.

We also have a little climber. I really just wanted a pretense to show these two pictures:

Three weeks ago, we traveled to Seattle to celebrate the wedding of these people:

It was a great time and a really uplifting experience for us. It was Naomi's first trip to the Seattle Temple and my first time there in quite a few years. We brought along Naomi's sister Katrina to look after Peri while we were at the sealing and reception. We had great Italian food, a great date before the sealing, and a fabulous time at the reception.

The wedding was on a Friday, so we decided to take Saturday morning to "do" a part of Seattle, which we all somehow decided was the Pacific Science Center. We arrived a couple of hours before opening, so we wandered around Seattle Center for a while.

That same day, Seattle was celebrating its local cuisine with a food festival Bite of Seattle, which, combined with our two hour wait, made us all fairly hungry. We also discovered a neat little statue of a Pigasus, or winged pig. Peri loved him so much, we got about thirty pictures so as to recreate him in wood or clay.

It's been about ten years since I've been to the Pacific Science Center. I had forgotten what cool things it contains. Peri loved the dinosaur and space exhibits, though she was a little afraid of the large dinosaur models.

The main event for Peri was the tropical butterfly garden. We spent a half hour in the butterfly room following her around as she discovered all the butterflies. She was a very good girl and didn't touch or step on any of them. It was a real treat for me to hear her so excited for so long about the butterflies.

We got a little tired and hungry after two hours, but luckily for us, we had a whole food festival outside to try out. Peri and Uncle Ben were excited for fancy corn dogs (featuring brats or polska kielbasa instead of just hot dog). Aunt Katrina opted for an elk burger, and Naomi and I hit up a pirozhki place. Absolutely delicious, by the way.

The next stop was Ellensburg, the halfway point, to stretch our legs. Peri spent about an hour running around the Fred Meyer which was fine by us. After that, it was a smooth couple of hours until home.
All in all, it was a great trip, and we had a lot of fun as a family. We're excited to be able to do it again soon.Gary "Race" Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10723968568528166236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030707898884680375.post-69550671604727824682013-08-05T17:27:00.000-07:002013-08-05T17:27:18.917-07:00Summer Sports Challenges Several months ago, I was invited to participate in my friend Derek's wedding. As such I needed to slim down to fit into the suit they got for me. Up until this time I had been wavering on riding my bike for whatever reason, but this motivated me to get out and ride. In the last two months I've been on my bike nearly every day. On Independence day I laid down 55 miles without much problem.

One tool I've been using is MapMyRide, which keeps track of my mileage and speeds. What I like about it is the online community and the achievements. I am a sucker for pretend virtual trophies, and am proud to say that I'm ranked first place for a 0.61 mile stretch of a paved trail in downtown Spokane.

Peri has even expressed interest in cycling again. We bought her a bike trailer last year, and used it maybe twice. Both times, Peri wasn't too jazzed about it. Well, I got into her trailer the other day to find her helmet, as she'll need that for her balance bike, and Peri got excited about the trailer. She voluntarily got her helmet on and hopped into her seat. I pulled her around the block, then up to the Walgreen's to drop off some movie rentals.

Our biggest ride to date is an eight-mile trip downtown and back. She was positive the entire time and got to see a lot more than she can in the car. Of course we'll be going again as often as we can.

I'm feeling pretty proud that I'm slowly becoming an athlete, which is a term I've never, ever applied to myself. Aside from cycling, we're also getting into hiking. In a similar situation with the bike trailer, we have a baby carrier backpack which we picked up a while ago, which Peri also hated. Naomi had the idea to call it a "piggyback" and in the last few weeks, Peri has been really excited for "super piggyback rides." Sometimes we have to just run her around the block to appease her. We've been on a few short hikes, including the entire loop trail at Kamiak Butte last week, and Peri has been really enjoying herself, as has Naomi.

The hiking has also bled into another activity which I'm enjoying with some friends: disc golf. The closest course to us is an old Boy Scout camp nestled in a pine forest. It's a difficult course and a pretty nice short hike. We went up as a family last week and played the front nine, with Peri in her piggyback for half the holes. She walked the other half with us and in both cases made an excellent caddy.
We threw a small party for her, which was a lot of fun! We decided to do a ladybug theme for the party, because Peri's favorite book series right now is Ladybug Girl. It took us a week or so to get all the decorations and things finished, and then we totally forgot to take pictures of them before the party. Oh well.

I did get a picture of Peri making off with one of the cookie favors I made for the guests to take home with them. Peri thought they were pretty scrumptious!
Just about a week before Peri's birthday, her newest cousin Danae was born! Peri loves her to pieces and always asks to hold her when she comes over. We're still in the process of teaching her to be gentle. Danae is a trooper and takes it well though! Here she is being held by her daddy.

Peri got a ton of great gifts, including books and dress-up items! She loves all of them and plays with them daily. Gary and I got her a balance bike that she is really starting to take to. She's still just a wee bit small for it yet, but she's still learning how to use it, and in another six months or so, it'll be perfect. She likes to take one of Gary's wrenches and bang on the bolts a little bit to "fix" it after she rides it.

So Peri's birthday was a blast and everyone had a lot of fun! We still have yet to give out our thank you cards, but we are very happy to have been able to celebrate with everyone!
We were thinking about leaving town and heading out somewhere we could actually light fireworks, but in the end we decided to stay in and just make the journey downtown to watch the fireworks in the park. It was a pretty low key day.

Gary decided to start the day with a bike ride. He went with my aunt and uncle to the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes and rode 50 miles. He had a lot of fun.

We ended up spending most of the evening with my sister and her children, which was a lot of fun for Peri! She loves her cousins. We braved going downtown to find a parking space, but it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be to find a space. The prices were actually pretty reasonable too, so that was a bonus.

We found a spot on the grass just a little bit away from where the fireworks launched, and had a fun time waiting and chatting and playing. After a while we decided we had the munchies, so we got some mini donuts (6 dozen) and a bag of kettle corn. They were really yummy!

Peri thought the fireworks were really pretty and very loud, but she had a good time. She even figured out when to say "ooooo" and "aaaahhh". It was pretty cute.

Then it was a made hike to the garage, and when we got to our cars and were ready to leave, there was some kind of stall and nobody was going anywhere for some reason we still haven't figured out. So we got out of the car again, and waited inside the mall, so we wouldn't get carbon monoxide poisoning from all the idling cars. And other than possible death-by-asphyxiation, we had a really nice time out with the cousins. Naomi Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17892943511685591894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030707898884680375.post-65572049583751923262013-05-05T14:41:00.001-07:002013-05-05T14:41:51.085-07:00Old McDonald Had a FarmI've been working diligently the last few days on framing up the second basement room. I've been working with deliveries of twenty sticks of 2x4 at a time, and I'm making short work of it. The outer walls have been replaced and I've even sectioned off the new "sleeping nook" and "crawl-in closet". This I finished yesterday to the sounds of Peri singing with her mom and aunt somewhere upstairs. We were able to closely replicate it yesterday for a video, which is below. Note that Peri is very aware of the camera when we record, and she usually won't do any of her tricks, so I was very surreptitious and got the audio.

It brought a great smile to me to hear my daughter belt out "EEE-IIII-EEE-III-OOOOOOO!!!!" at the top of her lungs, out of time.

Also in Peri's repertoire: "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes", "Lullabye, Lullabye", and "Ring Around the Rosey."

Anyways, I just wanted to share this quickly.
Naomi and I made some additions to Peri's backyard play area. We were at the Home Depot, and in the cull bin was a big group of pressure treated 4x6 timbers for $2 per stick. A length of pipe, some clamps, and several bags of cement later, Peri has an awesome horizontal bar to swing on. She promptly figured out the best application for it:

We originally thought that the next addition would be a balance beam, but that was superseded by a push-cart. See, we found an old, old riding lawnmower on the side of the garden shed, and Peri immediately jumped up into the seat and grabbed the wheel. She wouldn't let go. I peeled her out of it and she ran right back to it as soon as I put her down. Peri just loves to drive. I wheeled her over to the playground area and a half-hour later we finally went inside. Later, after dinner, Peri went back out with me and my wrenches so we could "fix it." I removed the cutting deck and the engine, leaving the wheels, seat, frame, and steering. Peri was glad to help and kept asking me if I was "fixing it."

Now Peri has always been inclined to help me on projects. At six months, she was very adept at setting screws for me while building shelves. She really loved using the wrenches on this mower. When we were done, she was really happy to hop up into the seat again and steer.

So, next week, we'll get back to the balance beam project. In the mean time, we're driving.

Every year since I can remember, my aunt Barbara has done the Easter egg hunts for us. Since our family started having grandchildren before all the assorted cousins and such grew up all the way, she's pretty much been doing it for the past gazillion years. And kudos to her, because it's always a lot of fun! Peri is currently the youngest child, so she got to go out first to find the eggs hiding in the grass in the middle of the lawn before the less scrupulous and more enterprising cousins could come out and snipe the easy ones.

At first she had no idea what was going on, but she was game to tote her little bucket outside to play anyway. I showed her the eggs, but for a while she was more content to shake them like maracas instead of collect them in her bucket. Then one of them broke open and she realized what exactly those eggs were good for.
She was battling a cold that week, so that's why her nose is so ookie.

So those are the only pictures we got, unfortunately, since I forgot the camera and I'm the only one who takes pictures anymore apparently. My aunt usually puts about 20 eggs out per round, and then we go for 3 or 4 rounds, so she and her two cousins ended up with a LOT of candy. After she figured out the whole game, she was grabbing up her easy middle-of-the-lawn-eggs and then going after the harder-to-find-on-the-edges-of-the-yard-eggs. She had tons of fun and is still munching bits of her candy every day. It's going to be a while before she makes a dent, especially since Mom and Dad might have gone a little overboard on her Easter basket this year too.

Peri also got some pretty neat gifts from her grandparents for Easter, and she loves them all. She has lots of activities to do and some new clothes to wear outside as it gets warmer. Plus a few new furry friends that she sleeps with and plays with. Thank you grandparents!

On Sunday (all of our bunny-type Easter things happen on Saturday, because Sunday is for churchy things) we would have gone to church, except we were all sick with the most terrible head cold that day. It was pretty sad. We did, however, muster up the energy that evening to tell Peri about the Resurrection and the real reason we celebrate Easter. I made some felt pieces for her new felt board and used it to tell the story while our Resurrection Rolls were in the oven. Peri listened very well, but I think the actual symbolism is beyond her yet. She also wasn't in the mood for anything sweet at the time, so she opted to skip eating the yummy treat. Eh, there's always next year! So instead we just bought Peri a small plastic slide. She loves it.
Some of you may look at those pictures and think, "What does she mean they have no space?" because clearly, there is a lot of space in our yard, the only problem is this portion of the yard isn't fenced in, and that would make even more money to keep random passersby and destructive teenagers from hurting Peri's swing set (we're not so worried about her being kept in the yard, as she doesn't usually go outside to play without us anyway).

So yay for slides! Naomi Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17892943511685591894noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030707898884680375.post-63873083971398130452013-03-13T14:01:00.001-07:002013-03-13T14:01:31.853-07:00More Baby Crafty GoodnessSo I'm really loving that Peri is enjoying doing crafts with me. It is so much fun to watch her start to get the hang of it! We've been doing some things around here to decorate a bit for St. Patrick's Day. We aren't too big on the holiday, but why not right?

So about a week ago Peri and I made green glitter shamrocks out of paper plates. She has so much fun with glitter, and it was a pretty easy thing to get going. We made two! Then about a week after that, we made rainbow clouds! I really like this craft, they look so cute! It's just construction paper and cotton balls glued to some more of that paper plate we had lying around. Then we put them on the screen door outside. Like this:
Since coming to Spokane, we've been going out and doing a lot of things with Peri, and she's been having a great time! And because words are boring, I'll just put up some pictures!
So the lighting was bad when I took these pictures, but these are pictures of the kitchen mat, which Peri has claimed as her own favorite play toy. It's really gross, but she has so much fun with it I just can't tell her no.

She wraps herself up in it.

And she tries to wrap other people up in it too (ew). But since no one will let her wrap them up in it, she puts it on the cat instead. You can barely see Puppy in these pictures, but he's curled up next to the vent.
One time she also got the mat over her horse and managed to climb up on it too. She used it as a saddle blanket while she rode her pony. It was the funniest thing! I went to get the camera, but she stopped before I could get a picture. Bummer.

It also snowed a couple mornings ago, and we took the time to go out before breakfast and play in it! It was Peri's first time really tromping around in the snow (we've gone on sled rides and stuff, but she never wanted to actually play in it) and she had a blast!
Peri and I also did a couple crafts! We were at JoAnn's, and she really liked this hat, so we bought some glitter and feathers to jazz it up a little when we got home. She had so much fun with her glue and glitter, but she promptly took the feathers off, so I guess she didn't like how they looked on her hat.
Then we did another craft the next day, and she decided that feathers looked much better on paper than on hats.

She liked doing the paper craft so much that we had to do two! We both really like how this one came out. It's so shiny and sparkly and colorful! They are both hanging on the fridge right now.

We also decided to walk to River Front Park (it's about an hour or so walk from our house) one Saturday just for fun. We called up my sister Sarah and she brought her husband and the cousins over so we could walk there together. Peri got to sit in her stroller, but the rest of us walked. It was a bit colder than we thought, since there was quite a bit of wind. And since we had the small children walking, it took a while to get to the halfway point, Mission Park. We decided to call it a day and stopped at Mission Park to play instead. I think this Saturday we will start at Mission Park and go to River Front Park from there, and hopefully it will be a little warmer out then! Though it snowed again a couple mornings ago, so probably not.

Anyways, since the kids were tired of walking, and it was still a bit cold, we decided to take the bus home instead. It was Peri's first time on a bus, and she did really well! I think she had a lot of fun. It was a really good Saturday to spend with family! If only we had remembered to take a camera though.
Our life has been a bit hectic, having moved twice in 3 months time. It was not fun. I think most everyone who reads this blog knows already that after 4 weeks of working at his new job, Gary got fired without any warning, or in our minds, reason. It was sad, and dumb, and really heartbreaking for our family. So after only three months living in a place we were beginning to love, we had to move back in with our family. Which is especially disheartening to a family who have been out on their own more or less.

However we refuse to be too discouraged, as this change has been a blessing too. It has pushed Gary to really pursue one of the other courses of action we were considering: going back to school. At first (before he got a job) Gary was just going to get a masters in mechanical engineering, or perhaps slide on over to civil engineering, but after thinking about it for a while, we decided that if he were going to go back to school, he was going to go back for something that he could truly love, and that, he decided, was furniture design.

This is going to be a bit of a switch, since Gary has never had any art classes (why don't they make engineers take art classes? It would only make sense if they want engineers to be able to think creatively), so he'll have a lot of first and second year classes to complete. But he'll get to skip all those lame history and literature and feelings classes that they make you take at university. I get the desire for a well-rounded education, but we go to college to specialize, so why do they waste so much time making us take classes that we don't need for our specializations and end up forgetting all about anyway. The whole thing is silly and makes higher education much more expensive than it needs to be. Okay end rant.

Back to Gary. Gary is going to apply to school for furniture design, and he's been working very hard making some art to submit with his application. I've been helping him a bit by giving him art exercises to do to get the creative juices flowing. So far he's doing pretty good. Peri and I are both very proud of him.

Meanwhile, he's also working on doing a bit of renovation to our family basement. It's really beginning to take shape and one room is very close to being done! Just a few more steps to go and then we have a nice updated room to sleep in! yay! Doing the second room is going to be very complicated though, but hopefully it can be done very quickly so we can have two rooms to sleep in instead of one! It is very cramped with all three of us in one room.

Otherwise it's been great being with family. Peri adores her cousins and is so happy to get to play with them. I think that will be another post though, as this one is pretty long all ready.Naomi Jacksonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17892943511685591894noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3030707898884680375.post-12097250908876194332013-01-21T18:54:00.001-08:002013-01-21T18:54:33.379-08:00Going Through a Cache of PhotosI found the camera's SD card and there is a big backlog of photos and events to talk about. We went over Christmas pretty well a few weeks ago, but there are some other things to talk about. Naomi had a birthday close to Christmas, and decided to make a mustache cake.

It's probably the best scratch-made cake we've ever made. The cake was German Chocolate, with store-bought coconut pecan frosting as filling, then a chocolate butter-cream frosting layer. Naomi and her sister Katrina had a great time with it. Katrina has a birthday on 24 December, so I can just imagine how short the short end of the stick was growing up. I think a mustache cake is the very least we could do.

We also pieced together a great snowsuit for Peri for sledding with us. The resulting view is one of the most adorable I've ever seen.

She is wearing just her tenni-runners here, but she also has a great pair of boots that go with and really complete the ensemble.

She's also learning maybe four new words or phrases every day. She usually wakes up before us, and comes to cuddle with us in the mornings. This will lead to playing peek-a-boo with us, only we say "there she is!" Peri now beats us to it. She'll pop out from under the blankets and shout "the-sh-iss", and it's getting better all the time. She learned both "cat" and "meow" yesterday, and figured out that a cat says "meow," which is pretty cool.

We went to visit my mom last week, which worked out to be pretty fun. We took the ferry to Anderson Island, which I haven't done in 23 years, and ended up hiking a couple of miles with a regional walking club. Peri was kind of bored in her stroller, and it did get pretty cold, so we didn't do the entire planned hike and turned back to the ferry dock.

Something that made me really happy, was how Peri fell in love with Grandma's piano. She was really calm and gentle about it, and didn't just pound the keys like we thought she would. I'm really very proud of her and found that we had to tear her away from it.
We were fortunate enough to have my family come visit us in Yakima for Christmas. We had a lot fun baking, cooking, playing games, and just playing around. Peri got to play with her cousins, whom she adores. She followed them around and was generally a pest, wanting to do everything they did. Deep down I think the cousins actually loved the attention. Peri gave Jeilyn an extra long hug when she left; it was so cute.

We made a ton of food for dinner, which everyone enjoyed to the fullest. My brother said it was the fanciest holiday dinner he ever had. So there's something. We got out the apple plates that both of Gary's grandmothers collected, as they are especially suited for Christmas meals. We actually used the bronzeware we inherited from Gary's grandma as well. It was a lot of fun! Though not so much when it came time to clean up. But you do what you gotta do I guess.

Peri got a lot of cool gifts for Christmas, and she loves every single one of them. We totally forgot to take any sort of pictures during the family's visit, but we did get a few videos of Peri playing with a couple of her toys today.

Grandpa Jackson gave her and her other cousins a rocking horse for Christmas, and she just loves it. She likes that when the tail moves it tickles her feet, and that she can put her fingers in the pony's mouth when it moves too. She also does some trick riding on it, though I didn't quite get a video of her doing it this time. She half-stands on the saddle and rocks for a bit, until her feet slide off. She's listening to My Little Pony Songs in the background, in case anyone is curious.

Gary also made sleds for all the children this year too. We took Peri's sled out today, and she loved it!

The only other video we caught of my family's visit is one where my sister Katrina and brother Benjamin are playing fruit ninja together. Katrina is so cute because she plays like a little kitty cat. It's so funny!

So we're all enjoying all of our gifts, and we're very happy to have had everyone over for Christmas! For New Year's we don't have much going on, and I don't think we really want to after all the Christmas chaos. We bought some sparkling grape juice which we will drink at midnight tomorrow. Sounds like a fun evening doesn't it?
